The Golden Whistler is found across eastern, southern, and western Australia—including Tasmania—as well as in New Guinea, Indonesia, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands, inhabiting dense forests, woodlands, mangroves, and scrublands. It feeds mainly on insects, spiders, and other small arthropods, but also consumes berries, foraging alone or in mixed-species flocks from the lower to middle levels of vegetation.
