The Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is the largest member of the kingfisher family and one of Australia’s most iconic birds, instantly recognisable by its booming, cackling call that echoes through eucalypt forests, woodlands, and even suburban parks. With a stout body, large head, and strong beak, it sports dark brown wings, a cream‑white underbelly, a bold brown eye‑stripe, and flashes of pale blue on the wings. Native to eastern Australia but now found in other regions including Tasmania and Western Australia, the kookaburra is a skilled carnivore that perches patiently before swooping on prey such as lizards, snakes, insects, rodents, and even the occasional goldfish. Highly social and often monogamous for life, breeding pairs are supported by older offspring who help defend territory and raise chicks, making the species a fascinating example of cooperative family living.
