The Scarlet Honeyeater is a small, brightly coloured honeyeater with the male vivid red and black and the female duller brown, typically seen flitting in the upper canopy and edges of rainforest, woodlands and gardens along the east coast of Australia from Cooktown in Queensland to Gippsland in Victoria, with northern populations resident and southern birds seasonal or nomadic. It feeds mainly on nectar from flowering trees and shrubs, and supplements its diet with small fruits and insects, often following flowering events and moving locally to track food supplies.
